Weaving Words: Fiber Arts and Picture Books

The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art: This exhibition explores the connection between fiber arts and picture books. Focusing on the past sixty years of illustration history, the exhibition takes an intimate look into how artists have experimented with materials to replicate intricate textures. In the hills of the Andes and valleys of Central America, weaving plays an important role in community identification and memory-keeping. For African Americans in the Southern United States, and later across the country, quilts told stories and brought liberation. Even the simple act of patching up a jacket or sharing a blanket stitches us together with the people we share our lives with. When woven together, these illustrations showcase the many facets of storytelling, and the common thread that binds us together. The exhibition will feature artwork by Remy Charlip, Simms Taback, Andrea Shine, Juana Martinez-Neal, amongst other notable artists for a total of 30 works on view in the intimate Central Gallery.
